War Museum of

Askifou

Information about the Museum

In the heart of the Askifou plateau, surrounded by the towering White Mountains of Crete, lies a remarkable repository of wartime history: the Askifou War Museum. This establishment, though modest in size, offers a profound glimpse into the military heritage of the island, especially during the challenging times of World War II.

Housed within a traditional Cretan home, the museum is the passion project of a local resident, Georgios A. Hatzidakis. He meticulously gathered and preserved artifacts, relics, and personal accounts, turning his family home into a homage to the bravery of his ancestors and fellow Cretans.

The collection inside is vast and varied. From uniforms, weapons, and ammunition to personal letters, photographs, and medals, each item tells a story of resilience, sacrifice, and patriotism. A prominent feature is the array of remnants from the Battle of Crete, showcasing the island’s significant role during the war.

Visitors often find the firsthand accounts and personal stories the most moving. These narratives, combined with the tangible artifacts, create a poignant connection between the present-day visitor and the wartime experiences of those who once tread the same land.
