Lake Kournas

Information about Lake Kournas

Located south of Georgioupolis, Lake Kournas stands proudly as the only freshwater lake on Crete. Its importance lies not only in its uniqueness but also in its ecological significance to the island.

Encircled by rolling hills, the color of the lake’s water subtly transitions throughout the day, shifting from a light turquoise in the morning to a deep blue by evening. Consequently, its sandy shores have become favored spots for relaxation and picnics, thus attracting both locals and tourists alike.

Inside its depths, the lake serves as a habitat to a diverse array of aquatic species, notably including some that are endemic to Crete. For instance, eels, turtles, and various types of fish can often be spotted near the shoreline, delighting observers.

Adjacent to the lake, traditional restaurants offer a taste of local Cretan cuisine. Moreover, for the more adventurous, pedal boats are up for rent, providing an opportunity for visitors to explore the lake’s many facets.
